I agree that Dortmund was clearly better and a higher loss would have been deserved, but your first two points are nonsense. Of course Nova, Podolski and Geromel would have made a difference. Freis would probably have played right midfield then, instead of Sanou or Chihi. Or Soldo could have played last year’s system with one forward and leave Maniche out (who is obviously not fit yet, but had a decent game, imho), that would have left Poldi at left midfield /striker hybrid. Additionally. Geromel > McKenna, especially with regards to tactical / passing abilities.
To the second part: Daum never ever played Brosinksi as a holder together with Pezzoni. Brosinksi started in 6 games (and was taken out in 5 of those) and was subsituted in 4 more for a grand total of 435 minutes. (That’s from transfermarkt.de) If he played, he played right midfield (instead of Vucicevic). The usual starting eleven had Petit and Pezzoni as holding midfielders with Ehret on the left flank and some random other player (Vucicevic, Brosinski, Sanou, Radu, Chihi…) on the right.
I think this year’s ideal starting 11 would be Mondragon – Wome, Geromel, Mohamad, Brecko – Ehret, Petit, Maniche, Freis – Novakovic, Podolski.
Ad 3.: Petit was slightly injured and therefore Matip was subbed. Stupid move, I agree, Petit with one leg is better than Matip.
A final point (sorry for the long post): Köln’s Physio is Dieter Trzolek, well known for, well, alternative treatments. Köln bought him from Leverkusen (yes, that’s right) last year.

As always I welcome the opinion. Supporters will obviously alwats know more about their teams than I do and so your insight helps me learn.

Sure, you’re right, when the own team is concerned, the responses may be a little biased… Great blog, btw, especially the interviews.
